Free: Download this Copy Masterpiece…

One of my favorite Copy-Masters is Ed Mclean.

He’s probably most well known for his Newsweek control that mailed to 150,000,000 people over 15 years. It began…

“Dear Reader, If the list upon which I found your name is any indication, this is not the first - nor will it be the last - subscription letter you receive. Quite frankly, your education and income set you apart from the general population and make you a highly rated prospect for everything from magazines to mutual funds.”

I’ve found another letter he crafted for Art News. Its a masterful example of hype-free selling. But sell it does. Notice how he captures the interest of his target audience, entertains, teaches, sells and flatters the reader all at the same time.

I’ve noted elsewhere in this blog that he was a fanatic about research. Notice how much research McLean I’ve found this letter he wrote for Art News. He published it in his long out-of-print book “The Basics of Copy”.

I’ve attached a copy of it here for your enjoyment.

McLean’s 1902 Letter

P.S. Doh! After a year, I’ve finally put some info in the “About” section of this blog — so, if you’ve been wondering who I am, what I’m about and how to contact me, you can view it here…
